With the Electric Vehicle(EV) boom comes the challenge of the charging station network. Drivers want to be able to charge at home, but to overcome range anxiety they also want to charge on the road as well. The challenge is to provide fast charging without stressing the energy supply grid.
The fast charging is achieved with paralleling several AC-DC chargers in order to reach 100kW. This allows a re-charge of a high-end EV car to 80% in 40 minutes. If 10 cars are charged simultaneously a full 1MW is required from the grid. Charging stations therefore sometimes include a PV plant on the sunshade roof and a battery storage system. This stored energy is used to reduce the energy peaks and to best use the energy from the sun.
The chargers use the ATO to measure the AC current while the PV inverter uses other LEM transducers.
